This work, in which Muhammad ibn Munawwar recounts the virtues of his grandfather Abu Said, has retained its importance since the day it was written.
Abu Said was a Sufi who lived a profoundly spiritual life, rarely seen in the history of Sufism, and effectively reflected his life to those around him. His path in Sufism was almost identical to that of Bayezid Bistami, Hallaj al-Mansur, and Abu'l Hasan Harakani. After a difficult struggle, asceticism, and a life of hardship, he spread a Sufi understanding centered on love and ecstasy. On various occasions, he organized Sema gatherings, listened to and shared music. Abu Said, who cultivated good relationships with statesmen, merchants, and traders in particular, and earned their respect, saw his influence in the region expand day by day.
This work is the most important and detailed of the hagiographies written up to its time. It is very rich in terms of both how a Sufi should be and its reflection of the colors of social life. It touches upon many topics such as banquets, individuals, social classes, political events, the relationships between scholars and members of Sufi lodges, etc. Therefore, this work was one of the early works discovered by Orientalists in terms of showing the practical reflections of Sufi thought, which influenced Islamic societies for centuries.
