I consider it my duty to write memoir-essays about the individuals you will encounter in this book. They were the coincidences of my life, whom I met by the hand of fate, from whom I benefited in terms of knowledge and experience, from whom I gained ideas and impressions about worldviews, and from whom I grasped anchors regarding how to conduct a scientific and intellectual endeavor. Good and fruitful coincidences... I would reconstruct them in my own way, with the eternal traces they left on me; some profound, moral, and philosophical, some painful, and a small portion ironic or surprising. Perhaps I would reconstruct myself. What I want to do is not write a memoir in the classical sense. Although I recount certain events around specific individuals in a loose chronology in the texts I write, it is more important and prioritized for me to convey the knowledge base, feelings, and aspirations for Turkey and the future that several generations nurtured and flourished within. Because I, like others, am somehow present within that knowledge base, that feeling, and that vision of the future.
