The nineteenth century was a period in which Turkish society sought a new direction politically, economically, socially, and intellectually. These new pursuits concerning almost every aspect of the state and the nation were directly reflected in literary life, and the novel in particular became a medium through which such issues were addressed. Assuming the task of preparing public opinion for the desired reforms, novelists made the prevailing Tanzimat-era sentiments of “backwardness” and the need for “progress” the subject of their works from many different perspectives. While incorporating their own ideals into their narratives, authors also undertook the responsibility of introducing and promoting the political actions and reforms of the period to the public.
This study examines and analyzes how post-Tanzimat political ideas and their practical manifestations were reflected in the Turkish novel, focusing on the fields of law, administration, state policy, political economy, and education. By questioning certain misconceptions about the literary atmosphere of the era—many of which have not been thoroughly examined—the work also reveals how changing modes of thought and social life were mirrored in novels.
