This work examines the expansion of the Ottoman Empire into the Middle East and North Africa, the regional dynamics, and the colonial activities of European powers in these lands from a different ideological and methodological perspective.
The work analyzes the critical 58-year period beginning with the Battle of Marj Dabiq in 1516 and culminating in the conquest of Tunis (1574) during the reign of Selim II.
Soviet historiography is known for approaching events from the perspective of socio-economic classes and popular movements. In this work, Ivanov analyzes not only the decisions of the sultans but also the psychology and role of the Arab peasant, merchant, and urban population in the conquests. In this respect, it serves as a reference source for both Ottoman historians and Middle East experts.
