This is a fundamental reference work examining the period of political, cultural, and social awakening of Turkic communities under the rule of Tsarist Russia. First published in 1985, the work is currently being presented to the academic world by the Turkish Historical Society Publications.
The book focuses on the identity search and institutionalization efforts of Muslim and Turkic communities in Russia, achieved with a speed equivalent to centuries over a critical 12-year period.
The work begins with the constitutional monarchy (October Manifesto) that Tsar Nicholas II was forced to declare in 1905. The partial freedom provided during this period paved the way for a very rapid cultural and political awakening, especially among the Kazan Tatars, Crimean Tatars, and Azerbaijani Turks. The book examines this golden age of awakening, from its beginnings until the establishment of the communist regime with the Bolshevik October Revolution of 1917, using documentary evidence.
This work is still considered one of the most reliable sources for research on Eurasian history, the origins of Turkism, and the pre-Soviet Turkic world.
