The Castle of Udolpho

Ahmet Mithat Efendi, whose works span the entire Tanzimat and Servet-i Fünun periods and even the early years of the Constitutional Era, held many titles: journalist, short story and novelist, historian, theologian, philosopher... With volumes of works in all these fields, he was an encyclopedic writer who wrote on nearly every subject, from literature to geography and from music to the history of religions, seeking to inform his readers about every area of knowledge.

Ann Ward Radcliffe was a famous English novelist of the eighteenth century. Her work The Castle of Udolpho is among the earliest examples of the Gothic novel. Ahmet Mithat was the first person to translate this pioneering work of suspense literature into Turkish, and no other Turkish translation of the work has subsequently appeared.

The novel tells the story of Emily, a refined, beautiful, attractive, and obedient young woman. It focuses on the fears she experiences while surrounded by wicked people, her ability to resist them through her virtue, and how, having gained great experience through her trials, she ultimately earns happiness. Ahmet Mithat’s translation attracted considerable attention during its time.
