Tekinalp – The Apostle of Harmony –
Tekinalp (Moiz Kohen), a staunch member of the Committee of Union and Progress during the Ottoman Empire, advocated for the Ottomanization of Jews in line with Ottomanist politics. During the same period, he opposed the strong support given by Thessaloniki Jews to socialism, arguing that it was incompatible with the principles of Judaism. At the Ninth Zionist Congress, which he attended as a delegate, he advocated for the immigration of Jews to Ottoman lands. He participated in decentralization debates, harshly criticizing Sabahaddin Bey. In 1912, he joined the ranks of Turkish nationalist politics. During the Armistice period, he took refuge in the "Neo-Ottomanism" camp. During the war years, he, along with Ziya Gökalp, undertook the theorizing of national economics and solidarity. In his work "Turkification" (1928), written during the Republican era, he laid out the principles that Jews should adopt for their harmony and security. In Kemalism (1936), it was argued that Jews would integrate into society through the new regime and by adopting its tenets. Jews should become Turkified, secularized, and thus become an organic part of modern Turkish society, which had turned its face towards Western civilization.
Rıdvan Turhan presents a detailed and comprehensive analysis of Tekinalp's political and intellectual journey, which began with Ottomanism, evolved into Turkish nationalism, and ultimately culminated in his becoming a Kemalist Turkish nationalist intellectual.
