Memories from Occupied Istanbul

Memories from Occupied Istanbul is a valuable memoir-compilation that reveals, through firsthand accounts, the social, cultural, and administrative situation of Istanbul, the capital city, which was subjected to military and political pressure by the Allied Powers after World War I. Compiled by Hasene Ilgaz, one of the first female members of parliament and educators of the Republic era, these memoirs have been translated into modern Turkish from among important historical documents in the archives of the Turkish Historical Society Library. The book has been meticulously prepared for publication by esteemed historians Prof. Dr. İbrahim Ethem Atnur and Asaf Özkan through rigorous editorial work and archival analysis.

The book recounts the dark days that began after the Armistice of Mondros (1918) and continued until the Ankara Government took over the city (1923).

The work goes beyond official historical documents, reflecting the human and emotional dimensions of history. This book is a valuable resource because it recounts street gossip not included in official reports, the fears and hopes within homes, and the cruelty of the occupiers, all from the pens of those who personally experienced it.
