"Interest in Antiquarian Bookshops is Growing"
At the Sahaflar (Antiquarian Booksellers) Festival held in Üsküdar Square, around 43 booksellers set up stalls, attracting visitors from İzmir, Ankara, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Erzurum, and other regions. The festival, which began on October 25 and will run until November 3, features hundreds of second-hand and rare works, with book auctions and literary talks scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays.
Emin Nedret İşli, President of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association, said:
“We are very pleased with this event. The rising cost of books has impacted the trade, but for antiquarian booksellers, the picture is a little more optimistic. Second-hand and out-of-print books can often be more affordable than new books, making them increasingly appealing—especially to young people, students, and dedicated readers. This festival has drawn strong interest from collectors and book lovers who have found some truly exceptional books.”
He also thanked Demirören Media for its continued support of antiquarian book events.
Bookseller Ümit Nar noted that participants included five sellers from İzmir, one from Ankara, and others from various districts of Istanbul, with readers traveling from TRNC, Erzurum, and nearby cities.
“The festival is very inclusive—visitors of all ages, from devoted collectors to young students, come here. Üsküdar’s location, close to Kadıköy and Beşiktaş, makes it a perfect meeting point, and participation is growing each day,” he said.
Bahtiyar İstekli, President of the Üsküdar Antiquarian Booksellers Association, emphasized the importance of such gatherings:
“Festivals bring together booksellers from across Istanbul and give readers the chance to see a wide variety of books in one place, often at very affordable prices. They also draw people to visit our permanent book market here in Üsküdar, helping them discover what we offer year-round.”
