History of the Seljuks of Iran and Iraq

The author of the history of the Seljuks of Iran and Iraq, Râvendî, began writing Râhat al-Sudûr wa Âyat al-Surûr in AH 599 (1202–1203). The work essentially starts with the emergence of the Seljuks on the stage of history and concludes with the reign of the last Seljuk Sultan of Iraq, Tughril II. In a section added later, information is provided about events that took place between AH 590–595 (1194–1199).

Yazıcızâde Ali, one of the prominent historians of the fifteenth century and known to have served as an ambassador to Egypt during the reign of Sultan Murad II, translated Râhat al-Sudûr wa Âyat al-Surûr into Turkish and incorporated it as the second volume of his work Tevârîh-i Âl-i Selçuk.

In the Introduction of this study, the history of the Seljuks of Iran and Iraq is briefly presented to the reader. The examination includes a transcription and a modern Turkish translation prepared through a comparative reading of the Topkapı and Berlin manuscripts of Tevârîh-i Âl-i Selçuk, Râvendî’s original Persian text, and the work of Muhammad Iqbal. The volume concludes with a glossary, an index of proper names, and a facsimile of manuscript no. Revan 1391 from the Topkapı Palace collection.

In this book, readers will find remarkable information on many aspects of the Seljuks of Iran and Iraq, ranging from state organization and symbols of sovereignty such as the khutba, nevbet (royal military band), and hil'at (robes of honor), to subjects including the Assassins, Rafidism, Mevlevi traditions, and food culture.
