From the Orkhon Inscriptions to the Contemporary Turkic World

“My field is Modern Turkish Literature. Yet I wish to embrace Turkish literature and Turkish culture as a whole. Although I know that no single person can fully accomplish such a task, I feel a deep longing to know these fields. I believe in the continuity of the Turkish presence. Not only those living in Turkey, but the destiny of all Turks concerns me. I am descended from ancestors who, when they found those they loved in foreign lands, did everything possible to reach them, married them, embraced them, and multiplied. I consider myself simply Turkish. I am happy to be a member of this great nation and to know and introduce it through the works it has left behind.”

In From the Orkhon Inscriptions to the Contemporary Turkic World, İnci Enginün brings together her writings on linguistic and literary works that recount the adventures of the Turkish nation. Consisting of four main sections, the book includes essays written on a variety of subjects, ranging from the Orkhon Inscriptions to books reflecting the difficulties experienced by Turks living in Germany.

The volume also contains Enginün’s presentations delivered at the “Contemporary Turkic Alphabets Symposium” organized by the Institute of Turkic Studies at Marmara University, her impressions from travels to Russia, Tatarstan, and Mongolia, as well as two translations she made from Professors Bombaci and Clauson.
