Durkheim and Modern Education
Throughout his academic life, Durkheim continuously lectured and wrote about education, paying close attention to its theoretical and practical aspects, and its intersection with ethics. Much of his work on this subject was published posthumously and largely relied on his students' notes. It was translated into English, albeit slowly, after World War II. However, educational philosophers are increasingly asserting the applicability of Durkheim's ideas to modern education. This book examines Durkheim's place in modern educational thought at three different levels: Durkheim's ideas on education are analyzed and placed within the context of modern society; current educational problems are examined within a Durkheimian framework; and Durkheim's thoughts are linked to modern educational theory.
