Comparative Literature

The field of Comparative Literature, though highly debated today, remains an important discipline for understanding Turkish literature in the post-Tanzimat period. Following her doctoral dissertation Shakespeare Translations and Influences in the Tanzimat Era (1968), İnci Enginün continued her studies in this field, and her articles on various authors, translation studies, and image analyses were collected in Comparative Literature (1992).

Following the publication of Shakespeare in Turkish, an expanded version of her doctoral dissertation, our publishing house is pleased to present a new edition of Comparative Literature, revised and supplemented with four new articles.

Literature, which plays a major role in fostering acquaintance and understanding among nations, contributes through translation into various languages and through the emergence of perceptions about other countries. In this way, it helps us understand not only other cultures but also the issues and concerns of Turkish literature itself.

It is encouraging, though still insufficient, that scholars working in the increasingly widespread departments of Western Literature in our country are turning toward Comparative Literature studies. Comparative Literature research requires collaborative work and cooperation across different academic disciplines. We hope that this book will contribute to the comparative literature studies that are beginning to develop in various departments of our universities.
