Besir Fuad: The First Turkish Positivist and Naturalist

Fuad graduated from Fatih Rüştiyesi, the Aleppo Jesuit School, the Istanbul Military High School (1871), and the Military Academy (1873). He became an aide-de-camp to Sultan Abdulaziz. He participated in the 1875-76 Serbian War, the 1877-78 Russo-Turkish War, and the suppression of the 1877-78 Cretan rebellion. He left the military while a first lieutenant and dedicated himself to publishing (1883-1887). In four years, he wrote 16 books and more than 200 articles on various subjects.

Fluent in French, English, and German, Besir Fuad, unlike the intellectuals of his time, embraced naturalism in literature and positivism in philosophy. His writings received both interest and criticism, and he was forgotten shortly after his suicide.

M. Orhan Okay's doctoral dissertation on Beşir Fuad, prepared in 1962, was only published in 1969. The book was well-received in Turkish intellectual life and referenced in over two hundred books and articles. The author, having long been out of print, has revised, expanded, and added supplementary materials and photographs. Our publishing house is publishing it as the fourth book in the complete works series by M. Orhan Okay.
