An Ottoman Miracle: Architect Sinan
Mimar Sinan, the greatest symbol of Turkish culture and art history, compiled his memoirs in a manuscript called Tezkiretü'l-Bünyan, written in his own words. This manuscript, penned by Saî Mustafa Çelebi, recounts the events of Sinan's life, from his childhood to becoming chief architect and throughout his life. It describes the difficulties and hardships encountered during the construction of the Şehzade Mosque, the Kırkçeşme Waterworks, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the water wheel in the Mihrimah Sultan garden, the Büyükçekmece Bridge, and the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, all of which he designed and built. Sinan also includes events and striking dialogues surrounding the construction of these works, with his discussions with the world emperor Suleiman the Magnificent being particularly interesting. This manuscript, which brings us closest to Mimar Sinan and provides important clues about his perspective and worldview, is one of the most valuable documents we possess.
