A Loyal Dissenter: Menapirzade Nuri Bey of the Young Ottomans

The Young Ottomans Society occupies an important place in the development of modern political thought, intellectual life, and literature, and consequently in the formation of Turkish modernization. One of the members of this society, often celebrated as one of the first opposition political organizations in the Ottoman Empire, was Menapirzade Nuri Bey. The present study examines Nuri Bey through the intellectual circles, ideas, and individuals with whom he was associated, and, through his example, questions a number of commonly accepted assumptions regarding the Society.

The starting point of this book is Nûru’l-Kemâl, written by the renowned biographer İbnülemin Mahmud Kemal İnal. Long neglected, this manuscript by İbnülemin is undoubtedly an important source for future research in the fields of Turkish literary, intellectual, and political history.
