November 10, 1938, was a significant day not only for Turkey but also for world history. The young Republic was in mourning for the loss of its founder and leader, Atatürk; the world, meanwhile, greeted the death of one of the most important statesmen and commanders of the century with sadness. Like foreign leaders who, even if they had once fought against him, showed their respect for this important leader by joining the Turkish nation in its mourning, the foreign press also gave Atatürk the respect he deserved; countless articles and news reports were published after his death. These are fascinating texts showing how Atatürk and the Republic of Turkey he founded were perceived in the world during his lifetime. The idea of compiling these texts published in November 1938 came to a young foreign correspondent. Nuri M. Çolakoğlu, while working in London in 1987 as both the Bureau Chief of Milliyet and a programmer for the BBC's Turkish Broadcasting Section, decided to prepare a series of articles. That series later evolved into a book manuscript after days spent in libraries. Because a very rich list emerged, stretching from South America to Canada, from Australia to Egypt. This book, which was finally published after many years, is a unique work that tells us how Atatürk was evaluated by his contemporaries and how other nations bid him farewell.
