“The day I started school was a beautiful autumn day. As I said, I was five years old. They hadn't told me at home that this was going to happen. However, for a few days they had shown me the old, gold-embroidered book covers that the children starting school wore across their chests. One morning, in the İshakıyye neighborhood, in front of our mansion under the elm trees, schoolboys and girls, hand in hand, appeared with their turbaned teachers at the front, singing hymns. At the end of each hymn, a resounding 'Amen' was heard, and the hymns began again. In the reception hall, many guests from the neighborhood, the gentry, pilgrims, and religious scholars were seated in rows on the cushions. Sherbets and coffees were being served. This crowd both frightened and saddened me. They took my arm; I sat in the corner..." Hoca Ganî Efendi opened the gilded, old-style alphabet book that had been bought for me. He had me repeat the first letters of the alphabet with my index finger. Then he had me lick a piece of ink dipped in sugar. A prayer was said. My father said, "The flesh is yours, the bones are mine!" and entrusted me to the teacher. Hymns began to be sung again in the garden and streets. I think, besides the children from our New School, children from other neighborhood schools had also come. Because the procession was large. All these children were given cones of sugar and a day's allowance. It was customary for me to go at the front of this procession. But I was extremely sad. My mother didn't want me to either. The procession went on one side. They put me in a carriage with a servant. They quickly sent me from Saat Bayırı to the New School via a separate road.”
