The ancient city of Ephesus, one of the most extraordinary settlements of the Aegean region, was the cradle of a magnificent level of civilization.
The history of human settlement in the Ephesus region dates back to the Neolithic Period (6000 BC). Throughout its long history, the city was founded, destroyed, and rebuilt many times. By the eleventh century, Ephesus had declined to the size of a small village, and by the fifteenth century the settlement had been abandoned. Systematic archaeological excavations, which began in the nineteenth century, continue to this day. Among the most significant recent discoveries at Ephesus are the Terrace Houses.
When Ertuğ & Kocabıyık decided to produce an art book on the ancient city of Ephesus, they collaborated with the specialists of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, which has been carrying out excavations, restorations, and reconstructions at the site since 1954.
The scholarly texts of the book, edited by Prof. Friedrich Krinzinger, director of the Ephesus excavations, were written by the specialists responsible for the archaeological excavations and research at Ephesus.
The archaeological artifacts exhibited in the Selçuk Ephesus Museum, the İzmir Archaeological Museum, and the Ephesus Museum in Vienna were photographed by Ahmet Ertuğ.
