Turks in the Eastern Black Sea Region Until Ottoman Rule

This landmark study, written by Prof. Dr. İbrahim Tellioğlu, examines the Turkish presence and demographic structure of the Eastern Black Sea region before it came under Ottoman rule.

The book demonstrates, through academic evidence, that the Eastern Black Sea region did not become Turkified solely with Mehmed the Conqueror’s conquest of Trabzon in 1461; rather, it had already become largely a Turkish homeland long before that conquest.

In this work, İbrahim Tellioğlu refutes ideologically motivated or biased claims regarding the history of the region—particularly the Pontus theses—through the use of impartial historical sources, chronicles, and archival documents. The author argues that a substantial Turkish population had already taken root in the mountains, highlands, and inland areas of the Eastern Black Sea region before the Ottomans arrived.
