The aim of this book is to present, in a clear and systematic way, the most fundamental approaches to the study of time in the West, which remain valid today, and to contribute to making certain theoretical issues, whose discussions have been completed, usable in Turkish literary research.
Because there has been no study in Turkey that has dealt solely with the issue of time in narrative texts such as novels and short stories, this book primarily serves as an introduction to this subject. Therefore, after a comprehensive introduction, an attempt has been made to present, in a descriptive manner, how time can appear in a narrative text, starting from the smallest linguistic units of the text such as words, sentences, and utterances. Thus, it is aimed that the main concepts related to time presented in this introductory work will also lay the groundwork for more limited and detailed studies to be conducted in the future.
In the book, the theoretical explanations made while dealing with time in narrative are attempted to be concretized with Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's short story "Summer Night". The chosen story, for easier and more holistic understanding, has been evaluated in terms of its most prominent temporal structure, the most fundamental relationships between the story and time have been shown, and only the details that contribute to the analysis have been focused on.
