Bernard Lewis The Assassins - First Edition

Summary:

The word "assassin" was brought from Syria by the Crusaders and gradually acquired the meaning of "killer." Initially, the term was applied to members of the Muslim religious sect, a branch of the Ismailis, and followers of a leader known as the Old Man of the Mountain. Their beliefs and methods made them symbols of both fanaticism and terrorism in Syria and Persia during the 11th and 12th centuries and the subject of a rapid growth of myths and legends. In this book, Bernard Lewis begins by tracing the development of these legends in medieval and modern Europe and the gradual infiltration of accurate information about the Ismailis. He then examines the sect's origins and activities, drawing on contemporary Persian and Arabic sources and against the backdrop of Middle Eastern and Islamic history. The final chapter discusses some of the Ismailis' political, social, and economic consequences and examines the significance of the Assassins in the history of revolutionary and terrorist movements.
