Shakespeare in Turkish
Shakespeare in Turkish examines Shakespeare translations and their influence in Turkish literature. The first part of the book is based on İnci Enginün’s doctoral dissertation, completed in 1968. Covering the years 1876–1895, the dissertation entitled “Shakespeare in Turkish Literature of the Tanzimat Period – Translations and Influences –” was the first study conducted in the field of comparative literature in Türkiye. The second part of the book analyzes the translations produced during the Second Constitutional Period (II. Meşrutiyet) and the Republican era, as well as their impact.
Reflecting İnci Enginün’s accumulation of knowledge over many years and encompassing a broad historical period, this study not only traces Shakespeare’s journey in the Turkish language but also raises questions that will inspire many new studies and research projects.
