The most important change in our literature after the Tanzimat was the emergence of new literary genres, together with the increasing number of books and periodicals that followed the introduction of the printing press into our lives. Alongside the changes in the structure of the state brought about by the Tanzimat Edict and the new laws, their reflections were immediately felt in literature.
For the renewal of the individual, there is also a need for new perspectives and for becoming acquainted with new worlds. While steps were being taken to ensure the functioning of the state and social life, priority was given to military institutions and schools. Laws concerning all areas of social activity and new state institutions emerged. Literature, being truly a mirror of life, reflected these developments.
In the essays collected in this book, İnci Enginün discusses the ideas of freedom, education, and modernization that flourished in society after the Tanzimat and found their reflections in Turkish literature, together with the pioneers of these ideas and their most important works.
