History of Old Turkish Literature for Universities, first published in 2004 for use in Old Turkish Literature History courses taught in faculties of literature and education, quickly became one of the indispensable books in its field. With each new edition, the work incorporated the most up-to-date bibliography available, including recent master's and doctoral theses prepared at universities, even those not yet published.

However, it became apparent that these continually expanding additions would eventually exceed the scope of the Turkish literature history curriculum taught at universities and impose a burden far beyond the essential literary-historical knowledge that undergraduate students were expected to acquire. Consequently, the need arose for a more concise volume designed specifically to meet the requirements of undergraduate-level literary history courses.

For this reason, it was decided that this and subsequent editions of History of Old Turkish Literature for Universities would serve as a textbook containing a partially condensed text and only the necessary updates, rather than continuing to expand indefinitely. The enlarged edition prepared in 2007, together with later expanded editions, would be published under the title History of Old Turkish Literature and would be aimed at master's and doctoral students as well as academic researchers.
