Namık Kemal, Ahmet Mithat, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, and Ömer Seyfettin… The reason these names are brought together is that they are the peak writers that our literature can never ignore. These four writers proved themselves both in their own time and left profound impacts not only on our literature but also on our lives. Although each of them had different views they prioritized for society, there are characteristics that unite them. They belonged to generations who lived during the days when a great state was collapsing, who witnessed great tragedies, and whose hearts bled with the ignorance, poverty, and disasters into which the nation had fallen. It is perfectly natural that almost every conscientious thinker felt the need to do something in the face of this situation. The education of the people is common to all four of these writers. The spread of newspapers, the necessity of filling their columns, the establishment of schools, and the creation of new institutions in all professions, especially the military, based on Western models, all occurred during this period.
