Before Dawn Breaks
Having previously borne witness to his era through his books Politics Is Cruel and Nurettin Topçu: Remnants of the Past and Hopes for the Future, Ezel Erverdi, in this work, recounts his entry into the world of publishing, the people he came to know along the way, the companies in which he became a partner, and the periods through which Turkey passed.
The author presents in detail how Dergâh Bookstore and its branches were established, by whom and under what circumstances; the process that led to the founding of Dergâh Publications; its first published books; the creation of the Encyclopedia of Turkish Language and Literature; the individuals who contributed to this encyclopedia; and the projects that ultimately remained unrealized.
The book also tells the story of sister institutions that developed alongside Dergâh Publications: Ülke Publications and Bookstores, Emek Printing House, the newspaper İstanbul Postası, connections established with the cinema and textile industries, and relationships with political figures who left their mark on Turkey’s recent history.
Ezel Erverdi shares with readers the publishing profession to which he devoted his life, the friends who accompanied him on this journey, an entire intellectual circle, and the story behind the establishment of Dergâh Publications.
