This research is the story of the 19th century, the period when the clash between Eastern and Western civilizations was at its most intense, as seen through the eyes of a writer. It is the story of Ahmed Midhat Efendi's attitude towards Western civilization, a figure almost always relegated to the background in our literary histories, yet perhaps more influential than others in his time.
This book does not discuss whether Ahmed Midhat was right or wrong in his views on Eastern and Western civilizations. In reality, this debate has been ongoing in our press for over a century.
All his works reflect his own views and thoughts. This study is simply a compilation of his ideas on civilization, scattered across hundreds of his books, categorized and presented for consideration. A true assessment of the two civilizations can only be achieved when such studies—that is, research reflecting the views of all intellectuals who have played a role in our cultural life from the Tanzimat era to the present day—are completed.
